Treadmills Evaluation
Treadmills, like all exercise equipment, come in all sizes and
standards, and are sold by companies large and small. Before evaluating
treadmills for quality, we recommend that you learn some basic facts so
your decisions can come from a position of knowledge.
Treadmills represent a major financial commitment, so it is important
to look at all the information, not just about treadmills, that come
into the mix. Are you making this purchase with an understanding of
your physical, medical, and financial needs? Consult someone trained
and certified in physical fitness about treadmills, and their
appropriate use in an exercise program.
Who sells treadmills and how can you be sure you're buying a quality
machine? The first thing we recommend is that you buy from an
established manufacturer of treadmills. Unless it is a recognized
brand, you must be able to try it out by actually using it. Do not
purchase unbranded treadmills online. Keep in mind that treadmills are
like all other machines. You want a device that will not only be around
in 10 years, but you want a company that supplies parts for its
treadmills long after the purchase date.
We recommend treadmills that deliver at least 1.75 continuous
horsepower. A belt at least 18 inches wide and 51 inches long ensures a
large enough surface. Look for a resilient deck that absorbs the
shocks. Quality treadmills have pretreated decks that require very
little maintainence. Stay away from decks made with plastic over wood
or particle board. Modern treadmills use high tech control systems to
handle everything from motor load distribution to constant speed
correction. It's difficult for the average consumer to accurately
evaluate the sophisitication of the electronics, but treadmills today
can provide a wealth of options, from preprogrammed workouts, to heart
rate monitoring.
Although the hand rails on treadmills are used mostly for balance, they
are important enough to consider when purchasing. Also, motorized
treadmills have powerful motors and can cause injury if safety
precautions are not included. Look for auto shut off, and an emergency
shut off that is easy to find. Most quality treadmills have lifetime
warranties on the frame, 2+ years on the parts, and a year on the labor.
